MILLER'S MUSINGS
Greetings from the deer camp at Duck Hill, Mississippi. Glenda and I have had an extended stay here--a place we dearly love. Our son Josh spent a lot of time here when he was growing up. We are pleased that our eight year old grandson, Malachi, loves coming here also. Josh. Bethany and Malachi drove down the day after Christmas. They were able to stay for eight days. We praised God often for Josh's health. He is doing so well. He and Bethany enjoyed hunting together. Bethany's parents, brother and youngest sister also came for a few, days. We had a great time celebrating Bethany's birthday. I'll probably have to go home to heaven to have any greater joy than I had on New Year's Eve. Malachi and I went on our first solo ride on the Ranger. We had been looking forward to this for some time. We packed a lunch--consisting of country ham, biscuits and sodas. For five hours we explored the trails in the woods, scouted for new hunting places (stopping periodically for a bite of ham and biscuit). and discussed many profound subjects. We got braver as the day went along-until at last we every going up the steepest hills and down the deepest hollows and looking for the biggest mud holes we could conquer.
On October 4th I bagged my first Pope and Young buck with an arrow. Later that month Glenda and I went to Pietown, New Mexico on an elk hunt. I harvested a 6 x 6, seven hundred pound bull. It appears we will end the hunting season with my tail lights barely in view to Josh and the other guys. I am currently providing guide service only.
Not all my time was spent in the deer woods. I preached in some local churches. I have spent much time in study and prayer. I memorized the first chapter of Galatians and Isaiah 53 in preparation for three sermons. I am refreshed physically and spiritually and am looking forward to perhaps what will be the busiest four months of the forty-six years of my preaching ministry.
Many Southern Baptist churches are studying the New Testament book of Galatians this year. This is good. Martin Luther said Galatians is my epistle. To it I am as it were in wedlock. It is my Katherine.'' It has been called "The battle-cry) of the Reformation.'' "The great charter of religious freedom,” and "the Christian declaration of independence? etc. The grand doctrine of justification by faith without the works of the law is clearly and comprehensively set forth in this book. While circumcision may be prerequisite to being a Jew, it is not prerequisite to ''being a Christian! While baptism and the Lord's Supper are church ordinances, they are symbolic and not sacerdotal. While justification by faith produces liberty of conscience, it does not promote licentious conduct. Let us be vigilant in our comportment to these theological minimums which can neither be negotiated nor compromised.
Eric Smith has been my assistant this past year. He will serve alongside me in 2011. Eric is a beloved brother. a faithful minister and a fellow servant in the Lord. Our Lord called Eric to preach. I am privileged to be his mentor. He preached his first :”Official” sermon on January 2nd at Duck Hill Baptist Church. He gave an excellent exposition of 1st John 1 : 1-4.The date for our fourteenth annual Expository Preaching Conference is April 21 -23. We are planning for 50 men and their wives to be our guests. We will provide their lodging, meals. and a theological library. We will give them training in biblical exposition. This is all done at no cost to the participants. Our budget for this conference is $25,000. This is an investment in Kingdom work that pays eternal dividends. Dr, Hershael York, preaching professor at Southern Seminary, and I will deal with the nuts and bolts of 'verse-by-verse preaching through the Bible. Preachers are God's gift to the churches. Hallelujah, God is raising up thousands of young preachers who know the Scriptures and understand doctrine. These men are not looking for a big church with social and economic amenities commensurate with their academic credentials, but rather they are looking for a place, any place, where they can live out their allegiance to Christ. What a privilege to help mold and shape the next generation of biblical preachers.
You have been faithful and generous in your support of Line Upon Line. Our hearts are filled with the most profound gratitude for your kindness. While we do not wish to be presumptuous, yet we are confident that all our financial needs will be supplied "according to God's riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Praise the Lord! I am not in charge of fund-raising.
PRAYER REQUESTS:
1 . For our personal walk with the Lord.
2. For Josh. Bethany and Malachi
3. For mercy as Eric and I travel.
4. For stamina to keep up the pace.
